Human Resources/Retention Specialist





The HR/Retention Specialist ensures Mission Essential retains as many qualified and experienced employees in the most efficient and timely manner possible. The ideal candidate is a self-starter that displays the initiative and motivation needed to recommend and carry out new changes and procedures/policies. This role performs a variety of professional and administrative functions to support OCONUS Human Resources and Retention.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Travel throughout the Afghan Theater to assess, evaluate and report back on morale and well-being of Mission Essential and subcontracted employees
  • Track and trend resignations
  • Perform exit interviews
  • Provide everyday general counseling to employees
  • Provide constructive feedback to management and senior leaders
  • Act as a liaison between CONUS and OCONUS Mission Essential employees as well as between the Coalition Forces and Mission Essential employees
  • Manage, track and account for Retention Funds
  • Assist with the day to day operations within the Theater Human Resources Department
  • Facilitate the Retention Awards Program as well as present, track and promote the program
  • File maintenance (hard copy and electronic)
  • Leave of Absence tracking 
  • Assist with Defense Base Act Insurance claims and benefits documentation
  • Respond to inquiries regarding policies, procedures and programs
  • Prepare various reports as assigned
  • Plan and conduct new employee’s orientations
  • Perform other duties as assigned 

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of two years Human Resource/Recruiting/Retention related experience
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite with expert knowledge in Microsoft Excel
  • Willing to work and live in a deployed environment
  • Ability to work on a fast paced, complex and dynamic team environment 12 or more hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail

Desired Requirements

Prior military experience preferred
Experience in U.S. military recruiting/retention
Prior deployment to the Afghan Theater
A thorough knowledge of cultural, economic, geopolitical, and military issues of the Middle East is ideal
Ideal candidates will have previous operational experience working with linguists in support of Government operations
